Tips for the best result

Start from the highest-quality original you have; converting an already-compressed file twice loses detail.
If you need transparency, keep the output in PNG or WebP — JPG cannot store an alpha channel.
When resizing for the web, set the width you actually display at rather than shrinking a huge image in CSS.
Compress last, after cropping and resizing, so you are not re-encoding the same pixels repeatedly.
